Don’t Forget the Sports Physical This Summer
July 9, 2025

Family vacations, pool parties, cookouts, camping trips, fishing, bowling—even making ice cream—might all be on your summer to-do list with the kids.
But don’t forget to add one more important item: a sports physical.
In Wisconsin, the WIAA requires student-athletes to complete a sports physical every two years before participating in school sports or extracurricular activities. Since fall sports often start in August—before the school year begins—July is the perfect time to schedule your child’s physical.
You can book with your child’s primary care provider or with our Occupational Health team. Either way, a sports physical helps ensure your child is healthy and ready to safely compete.
What to expect during the visit:
-
A review of your child’s medical history
-
A routine physical exam
-
Immunizations updated (if needed)
-
Completion of school or sports participation forms
The provider will check your child’s height, weight, blood pressure, and heart rate; examine the heart and lungs; screen vision; and assess muscles, bones, and joints.
Sports physical vs. annual physical:
A sports physical focuses on physical readiness for sports. An annual physical takes a broader look at your child’s overall health—including physical, behavioral, and social well-being. If you already have an annual physical scheduled, your provider can complete the sports physical during the same visit.
These exams are also a great opportunity to ask questions and address any health concerns.
