What is your official Title?

Liz Hagen, RN

Registered Nurse in Operating Room

How long have you been at Watertown Regional Medical Center? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been a nurse since 2005 but have only been at Watertown Regional Medical Center for about three months. I moved back to the area to be closer to my family and hometown. Before moving back I worked as a cardiovascular and pre-operative nurse but and am enjoying my time in the OR here in Watertown.

What do you enjoy most about working at Watertown Regional Medical Center?
I enjoy the team I work with, it feels like a big family here. Everyone has been so welcoming, friendly and patient and they are willing and excited to teach me. It's exciting because I always love to learn new things and I also feel like I can bring things from my past experiences which allows me to teach others. I also like that no two days are the same as the patient population and variety of surgeries changes often.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I have always enjoyed taking care of people. I got to take care of both of my grandmas when they were in their 90’s. I started my journey by going to nursing school right after high school and working as a CNA to gain experience while I went to school.

What would you say to somebody wanting to get into your profession?
Nursing is a very rewarding profession. Your patients and their family members rely on you to get through the challenging and difficult times when they are seeking medical care. You have to be their advocate and their support system and you have to want to care for others to be able to provide excellent care for them.

It is also a profession that has a lot of changes. You need to be ready to adapt to new protocols and best practices and always be willing to study and learn something new.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
I enjoy hanging out with my family, I have a 2.5 year old at home that keeps me busy. I enjoy watching him run around and try to keep up with his cousins. In the summer I enjoy doing outdoor activities like running, golf and disc golf. When the weather isn't as nice I enjoy playing board games and love to cook!

What is your favorite place in the Watertown area?
I am new to the area so I don’t really have a favorite place yet. Still looking for the best egg roll in the area if you have any suggestions (willing to drive miles away)!

What is one thing you’re doing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19?
Wearing a mask and educating people who don’t understand the importance of wearing a mask, washing your hands and other basic things to help prevent the spread of germs.
