According to the American Cancer Society, by the end of 2018, an estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer will have been diagnosed in women, and about 63,960 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS – non-invasive and the earliest form of breast cancer) will have been diagnosed. With these estimates in mind, a woman currently has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. These statistics continue to make breast cancer the most common cancer among women, second only to skin cancer.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has recently released updated guidelines that lower the recommended age for colon cancer screening. According to the new ACS recommendations, those at average risk for colon cancer should begin screening at age 45 instead of 50. The new guidelines were put in place following a major data review that showed a rising rate of colon cancer in adults younger than 50.

Vision loss among the aging population is a major health care problem. Approximately one-third of the population have some form of vision-reducing eye disease by the age of 65. The most common causes of vision loss among the aging are macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. Approximately half of adults between 65 and 75 develop cataracts and this number is increasing every year!

Q. Why are surgeries at WRMC being postponed? As you may have heard, we recently discovered a mechanical issue in our facility that required immediate attention. This is a very complex issue involving the steam boiler system that serves many areas of our hospital. The issue arose from an imbalance in the water treatment provided to the boiler system. We were able to correct the imbalance by replacing a de-alkalizer and adjusting the chemical levels and pressure in the treated water that serves the boilers. We are now flushing the steam boiler system to ensure these adjustments are received throughout the entire steam system.
